Options

Mo commented below about something I have been thinking about for a while. Trying to get out of the box - what are the other options we can pursue? I've thought of nearly everything (I think), from the possible to the ridiculous.

- Try one more time at IVF at concept with Dr Thompson (already doing)
- Change Drs at Concept (possible)
- Move clinics to do IVM (Weight limit and cost)
- Try a completely different clinic and protocol (again - really?)
- Progress our local adoption application (already doing)
- Apply for fostering in WA (issues with working fulltime, possible)
- Apply for international adoption as well as local adoption which we have already started ($$$$)
- Having an embryo transfer of donated embryos while we are in Europe in October (unlikely)
- Flying to Colorado or Montreal to see the world leaders in IVF for a last-ditch effort ($$$$$$$)
- Having someone be a surrogate 'off-books' (illegal)
- Have someone be a surrogate legally (but that's not the problem, and we would have to use donor eggs anyway)
- Get an egg donor (I cant put someone else through IVF for my sake, and my eggs themselves are fine damn it)
- Moving to another country to be eligible for free IVF (some UK counties, part of Italy etc - a serious consideration at this point)

- Give up. (And die)

I'm not sure what the right answer is anymore

  1. Well, you have pcos so it may be different, but, I saw that famous doctor at McGill and he was not good at all! I wen to Montreal fertility centre and their stats were just as good if not better than McGill.

Anyhow, a good friend of mine lives in the uk and paid more in the uk for ivf than we did in Canada(and here it was 10k plus drugs, another 10k). Maybe they have changed their policy? Quebec in Canada actually has free ivf/ivm, long wait lists though!

Personally, I would do serious weight loss and ivm at the other clinic, but, we went into big big debt to have kids.

Hang in there, the answer will come.

  2. Hi Bec

So sorry that you have to go through the frustration of another cycle! I have been to both clinics (was at FSWA for a long time, went to Concept for 2 cycles including 1 cancelled cycle,, went back to FSWA and finally had success with IVM) and Concept turned out to be more expensive than FSWA once you add all the fees not included in the standard cost (ie blood tests, certain medication, blastocysts culture, embryo freezing and the separate bill for the fertility specialist). My bills at FSWA were always all inclusive so the cost shouldn't detract you from trying IVM again.
Concept also seem to be the most conservative clinic around concerning the risk of OHSS (whether that's good or bad I don't know). A friend got fed up with having cancelled cycles due to the OHSS risk at Concept and went to Hollywood and got pregnant 1st go. She got really bad OHS though.
Good luck with whatever you decide.

Keep in mind that although some countries do offer free IVF for residents, residency isn't usually easy to get for those countries. I don't know if you have an EU passport of some description, but even then it wouldn't necessarily be easy... I've just had a quick look at Italian residency requirements, and it looks like a really long and drawn out process. Same with the UK. It might take years and thousands of dollars you could otherwise be spending on IVF.

  4. Hi Bec

Have you considered Cape Town in South Africa? I have just had the most joyful, beautiful and successful donor egg IVF experience there.

Found a donor through 'Nurture', then went to Cape Fertility Clinic (twice) and now am 14 weeks pregnant with twins.

I did 10 rounds of IVF in Oz with my own eggs, only one was successful but we miscarried.

We did fresh donor transfer in Jan, it didnt work, but frozen transfer in April did. People are friendly, costs are extremely reasonable. Just another possibility to consider Bec...

    xx
